Join me in keeping my promise to my baby sister - an end to breast cancer!
My name is Shawn Gardner, I am a co-survivor of breast cancer, and I work for the day it is not a global movement for men like me to wear pink, but a fashion statement to do so. I look forward to the moment I no longer worry about my mother growing a lump, but growing old and cranky instead. I long to awake on June’s first Saturday and race not to save a life, but to beat the one running next to me. I await the point where it’s not my duty to know about breast exams and preventions and treatments, but about how to make the perfect margarita. I fight for the age where those in my life aren’t asked to reach in their pockets, but to reach out in friendship and laughs. I yearn for the freedom to not raise awareness and money and consciousness, but to raise my glass in a toast. I dream of an end to breast cancer and I will never stop fighting until that is a reality.
As you may know, I have dedicated my life to continuing my baby sister’s fight against breast cancer in her absence. At 26, Heather lost her battle in the fall of 2002, yet her legacy continues through the efforts and contributions of caring, dedicated people like you.
People like the more than 400 National Honor Society students at South County Secondary School, who are, as we speak, giving of their time and energy to organize the 2nd annual Talent Show benefiting the efforts of Team Heather and Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. These 12-18 year olds have realized the importance of our fight and are the latest folks to join the breast cancer movement and Heather’s ongoing battle to end this devastating disease. Won’t you please support us in any way?
You can support Team Heather’s efforts, as we embark on our 8th consecutive year in this groundbreaking national mission, by joining our team, sponsoring our team, or passing on the message of our team to those in your life. Team Heather is determined to surpass the $200,000 mark this year with a 2008 goal of $50,000. To date, Team Heather has raised over $154,000 for breast cancer awareness, research, and treatment thanks to committed people like you.
I pray you will act today, I look forward to making your participation or contribution mean something in the fight against breast cancer, and I thank you for the support that has given Team Heather a mighty say in Susan G. Komen’s global battle.
Yours in Appreciation,
Shawn Gardner (gardnershawn68@aol.com)
